The National Curriculum for Art aims to ensure that all pupils:

• Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
• Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
• Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
• Know about great artists, craft makers and designers and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

Our Intent:

At Killingholme Primary, we promote a positive attitude to learning (based on our school vision of Partnerships + Potential + Performance = Success), encouraging our students to aspire to achieve their full potential by providing rich, motivational, purposeful and inspiring learning.

At Killingholme Primary School, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. We believe that Art is a medium for students to express themselves and a way of supporting student’s emotional wellbeing and positive mental health. All artwork is celebrated and viewed as a positive expression from within. Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thought and ideas.  Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Our Implementation:

At Killingholme, students experience and study a wide range of art and art styles from a diverse selection of artists through a structured sequence of lessons; focus artists include both traditional world renowned artists and modern day artists and represent diversity in terms of nationality, gender and race.  Students are taught a range of techniques from the core art skills of: drawing, painting, colour, collage, printing, pattern, and are then provided with opportunities to recreate pieces of art in the style of the focus artist but are given the creative freedom to enjoy using their own personal perspective to develop and refine their own work.  The revisiting of techniques and styles offers opportunities for students to learn, understand and embed their knowledge and skills set to their long term memory. Students are also taught to evaluate their own work and the work of others in a positively constructive way, using technical vocabulary and critical discussion.

At the beginning of each unit, children create a concept map, where they are able to write down any knowledge they currently know about the topic ahead. They then add and build upon this each week at the end of a lesson in green pen. This creates a working document, which the children have ownership of, to show the knowledge which has been learnt throughout the term. At the end of the unit, children are given an exit task to measure the progress. In addition to this, at the beginning of each lesson, a retrieval practise activity is given to the children about the previous weeks' learning to bring the knowledge back to the forefront. This is known to the children as ‘It’s Nothing New’. We use assessment for learning to ensure all lessons are relevant and will help to plan for next steps.

Child speak skills mats can be found in the front of foundation subject books and these ensure children not only know what they are learning, but also the skills they are learning to be an arist. 

Subject co-ordinators are given regular time to ensure resources are kept up to date, to monitor subjects across the school, create action plans and provide subject feedback to SLT as appropriate. Subject leads once a term will also generate a standards report, based on the teacher's assessment of students over the term. This will inform their next steps in their subject.

The Impact:

The structure of the art curriculum ensures that children are able to develop their knowledge and understanding of the work of artists, craftspeople and designers from a range of times and cultures and apply this knowledge to their own work. The consistent use of children’s sketchbooks means that children are able to review, modify and develop their initial ideas in order to achieve high quality outcomes. As well as support the children’s ability to discuss a range of artists, their work and  techniques. Children learn to understand and apply the key principles of art: line, tone, texture, shape, form, space, pattern, colour, contrast, composition, proportion and perspective. The opportunity for children to refine and develop their techniques over time is supported by effective lesson sequencing and progression between year groups. This also supports children in achieving age related expectations at the end of their cohort year.
Classroom displays reflect the children’s sense of pride in their artwork and this is also demonstrated by creative outcomes across the wider curriculum.. The Art curriculum at Killingholme contributes to children’s personal development in creativity, independence, judgement and self-reflection. Children will achieve age related expectations in Art at the end of their cohort year.

This term we entered an Art competition in North Lincolnshire. The children were to design thier very own 'Bathesarus' - in any creative way they liked!

We are very proud to announce that Oliver B in Y3 WON out of 300 applications!!!! 

His bathesaurus was incredible, made out of a kitchen sink using his favourite bold colours. We hope you enjoy your prize Oliver and from everyone at Killingholme Primary School - a huge well done!
