Phonics
Phonics is the main way we teach children to read, in our school we use Letters and Sounds supported by jolly phonic actions.
So what is phonics? Words are made up from small units of sound called phonemes. Phonics teaches children to be able to listen carefully and identify the phonemes that make up each word. This helps children to learn to read words and to spell words such as s-a-t , this leads onto blending when they run the phonemes (sounds) togther to make a word, s-a-t sat.
The children will need to learn some 'Tricky Words..' These are words which you can not blend like: the, I, to, was.
Children need lots of practice at using their phoincs. you can help your child at home by: playing eye spy, writing shopping lists, finding sounds in a book, writing a menu for tea, or sharing a book with your child.
