STEM Day (Building Cars)
Welcome to our exciting page about our STEM Day! When we walked into Class 3 early in the morning, we saw racing cars on the whiteboard and instantly felt curious about what was happening! Stuart came into our class and told us that we were going to learn about what 'speed' means and how cars are powered. Stuart began by showing us some extremely fast racing cars and we investigated what powers the cars and why they go so fast. Stuart then showed us pictures of the Blood Hound which is currently being developed to break the world record for the fastest car in the world! Did you know that Stuart is involved in this project? We were all very excited about this and we contributed our opinions and thoughts about what the Blood Hound needs in order to brake the world record. After we learnt about speed and the history of it, we began by building our own balloon powered cars. To do this, we had to measure and cut the axels so the car could move on the ground. We then attached the wheels. However, some of us did not attach them properly at first and they fell off on our first test run. How frustrating that was! To power the car, we had to attach a balloon and pipe. After this, we could blow into the pipe to blow the balloon up. We put them on the ground and WOOSH! The cars zoomed along the ground! We took our cars outside to race them and had to battle against some strong gusts of wind.
Later on that day, we investigated what it would be like to live in a deserted place (linking to our topic of travellers and explorers and what they needed in order to survive on their journeys). We had an A2 sheet of paper and we had to design and draw a town and include necessities what would support a community in surviving. We discussed the importance of electricity and why we need this (to power houses, hospitals and other important things). Some of us even included a McDonald's, although I don't think this is a basic living necessity! To finish, we had to stand at the front of the classroom and present our towns talking about what we have included in order to survive. Some of us even talked about travellers and how they could use the town to survive, so a huge well done!
We hope that you have enjoyed reading about our fantastic day! Please enjoy our photos and thank you for visiting our page.
